Agiofarago located about 80 km south of Heraklion. This is a small canyon in Asterousia Mountains.
Its name comes from the fact that many hermits chose it as an ascetic place because of the isolation it offered. It is said that here lived over three hundred acetic monks in isolation from each other who gather only once a year in the cave "Goumenospilio" to count themselves and see if someone had died.
Agiofarago has 1.5 km length and ends at a magnificent beach whih is worthwhile to visit and swim. The gorge is easily crossed on foot in about 20-30 minutes, while in the entrance there is a place that you can leave your car. Before the beach there is the church of Saint Anthony dating back to the 14th century, where located a well from where you can take water. East of the beach over the rocks, there is the lake "Vourvoulitis" which communicates with the underground sea.
