Frangokastello is located 80 kilometers south of the city of Chania. It is a small seaside village, famous for its Venetian fortress and famous summer destination.
The fort, which accompanies one of the most famous legends of the island, was built in 1371-1374 by the Venetian feudal lords of the area in order to protect them from pirates and revolts of the locals. The legend accompanying the fortress known as "Drosoulites" refers to shadows that appear during the morning hours of May towards the fortress and then lost at sea, look like pedestrian and equestrian army. Locals believe that are the souls of warriors who fought the same period in the region during the Turkish occupation and had not buried.
