The Monastery of Preveli is located 37 km south of Rethymnon, in a unique natural landscape of southern Crete with view of the Libyan Sea. Here also we find the Preveli lake and the famous palm forest.
In fact there are two separate monasteries with 1.7 kilometers destination from each other. The "Lower monastery" dedicated to St. John the Baptist is the first we encounter, is the oldest and is ruined. Due to the wealth it offered by the surrounding fertile land repeatedly plundered by the conquerors. The "Back monastery" dedicated to St. John the Theologian is newer and on duty.
The monastery was founded in 16th-17th century by the feudal lord Preveli from where it got its name. During the Ottoman Empire played an important role in the liberation struggle, and was religious, cultural and artistic center.
In the monastery museum houses priestly vestments, sacred objects, icons from the 17th-19th century and other precious relics, mostly from the 18th and 19th century. Also exhibits the miraculous Holy Cross bearing piece of the True Cross at its base and comes from Constantinople.
