Every year on the beggins of carnival many villages in Crete do traditional events to celebrate. The most famous event is this which takes place at Mochos, a village near to Hersonisos and Stalida, 40km from Heraklion. The event called “xinohondros and mouzoudia” which refer to the traditional food of the day (xinohondros) and to the carnival action (mouzoudia).
“Xinohondros” is made mainly in Crete. It’s a combination of cracked hard wheat and sour sheep’s milk or yogurt. When it is mixed, it is put under the sun to dry. It is usually consumed in dried form or cooked in soups, meat or vegetables.
“Mouzoudia” is a local vocabulary word which refers to smudge from coal, an old carnival tradition of Greece, a way for locals to masquerade as evil beings.
The event takes place at the square of village, there will be a stage with music and around of the square will be stands with free wine, xinohondros, and soft drinks. Also there will be stands with barbeques selling greek souvlaki.
The event is on Saturday 5 of March and goes on until morning, be sure you will be in carnival and dance mood.
